The Performing Arts Center, Wuhan is situated within a waterfront park, with the site bordered by urban streets to the north and opening southward toward gently rolling grassy slopes and the riverbank. The city, nature, water, sunlight, and wind—the inherent directional forces of the site—together shape the architectural form. This project is not an isolated building, but rather a spatial field that continuously extends between the city and nature.

The organization of space and structure derives both from the intrinsic requirements of performance functions and from the region's hot, humid, and prolonged summer climate. The concept unfolds across two dimensions. Firstly, the multi-configurational switching and flexibility of the theater spaces. Theatres of various scales are woven into a continuous spatial construct, allowing multiple auditoriums to share a common stage or operate independently; they overlap and interconnect with one another, creating a rich spatial experience. Secondly, the project explores how architecture can be fully interwoven with the environment and human activity—through the orientation of the building, the integration with the park, the introduction of natural light, the flow of air, and the organization of semi-open spaces. These strategies enable the theaters to transition seamlessly between indoor and semi-outdoor modes, allowing visitors to enter and experience the theater. To the north, the building responds to the city; to the south, it dissolves into the park, inviting people to stroll and linger. The architecture appears as a natural extension of the landscape, merging harmoniously with its surroundings. 

GA DOCUMENT is an annual professional architecture journal published by A.D.A. Edita Tokyo. Its mission is to "document the history of contemporary architecture and spotlight international design works that capture the spirit of the times." The publication features analyses by international researchers and critics on significant architectural projects worldwide. The GA DOCUMENT-INTERNATIONAL special edition aims to explore emerging trends in outstanding global architectural design. Each year, it curates the latest projects, either under design or construction, from renowned architecture firms across the globe and hosts the "Contemporary World Architects Exhibition" at the GA Gallery.
