Xiaozuo Island Art & Music Center was featured in GA DOCUMENT-INTERNATIONAL 2025
2025.11.06
Xiaozuo Island Art & Music Center (under design) by Studio Zhu Pei has been featured in the renowned international architecture magazine GA DOCUMENT-INTERNATIONAL 2025 and invited to participate in the 33rd Exhibition of World Architects at GA Gallery in Tokyo, Japan. This marks the sixth consecutive year that our studio has been invited to feature its annual work in the publication and participate in the exhibition, following the Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum (2020), Majiayao Ruins Observatory(2021), Majiayao Ruins Museum (2022), Chongren Culture and Art Center (2023), and Boat Archeology Museum (2024).

This is a cultural gathering space on the coastline, where music, nature, and art converge. The site was once a seafood purchasing and sales station established on the Xiaoqi Peninsula at the easternmost end of Quanzhou in the 1950s. The block-stone building complex is plain, simple and rough. The blood relationship between people, the ocean and labor is vividly and directly anchored in this site. New buildings are reconstructed in the gaps of some of the old buildings that have been left behind. The architecture becomes a resonant space between humanity and the sea again, a place born from the ocean’s natural environment.
The spatial form merges marine generative logic with natural geometric order and the construction form of the arch structure. The architecture resembles a conch shell, which is not only a generator of natural sound, but also creates a natural space form for the amphitheater.

GA DOCUMENT is an annual professional architecture journal published by A.D.A. Edita Tokyo. Its mission is to "document the history of contemporary architecture and spotlight international design works that capture the spirit of the times." The publication features analyses by international researchers and critics on significant architectural projects worldwide. The GA DOCUMENT-INTERNATIONAL special edition aims to explore emerging trends in outstanding global architectural design. Each year, it curates the latest projects, either under design or construction, from renowned architecture firms across the globe and hosts the "Contemporary World Architects Exhibition" at the GA Gallery.
Exhibition Period: July 26 – September 15, 2025
Opening Hours: 12:00 – 18:30
Address: 3-12-14 Sendagaya, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo 151-0051, Japan
